RFC is a ministry whose purpose is to utilize the
increasing popularity of motorsports as the "platform" from which the
"Gospel of Christ can be proclaimed. Race cars become pulpits, and our
boundaries of ecclesiology expand to include both padded pew and splintered
grandstand.
Through a committed staff of trained chaplains and
ministers, we provide non-denominational chapel services at hundreds of
motorsports events - and through this staff, thousands are touched each
year.
Professional and amateur racers, crew members, sponsors
and officials regularly attend these Sunday morning chapels, with attendance
occasionally more than 450. Larry Smiley - president of RFC - also serves as
the official chaplain of the National Hot Rod Association, the world's
largest racing organization.
Like any effective missionary
endeavor, success involves the total saturation of the messenger within the
culture of the recipient. Though we may not always cross national borders or
struggle with linguistic barriers, there still remains a cultural resistance
which must be penetrated.
Have you ever wondered where the
cowboys went, those adventurous heroes of our past? Have they ridden off
into the sunset of changing times or fallen prey to the electronic renegades
of technology? Not entirely! Our heroes still do exist. Many have merely
dismounted their archaic appaloosas and saddled themselves into a new breed
of creature, motivated by the power of a multitude of horses! Yes, our
heroes are alive and well, riding under space age protective helmets and
goggles rather than dusty red kerchiefs and Stetson hats. Therefore, our
philosophy is to utilize the respect and popularity of racers to effectively
reach other racers and fans alike.
What is required to serve in
RFC?
Perhaps you have a desire to serve in some capacity with
Team RFC. All events are covered by a staff of ministers, which in many
cases have pastoral or professional experience. These staff members serve as
pastors and chaplains on various sportsman and racing circuits.
