“A Blue
Christmas?”
When it
comes time for Christmas decorations, folks traditionally go for décor in
reds and greens. These are the colors of Santa’s outfit, Rudolph’s nose, the
elves’ hats, the trees … as the song “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the
Year” says, even the stoplights get into the game!
But one of
my favorite Christmastime colors is blue. These days, with more modern
creative expressions, it’s not completely unusual to see blue themes on
Christmas trees and packages, but it’s still somewhat rare. But if you
worship in a place that follows the traditional Church liturgical calendar,
you might see lots of blues around the altar.
Why would
this be? Well, blue is a color indicator of royalty. It’s a wondrous,
mysterious story – the people surrounding Jesus at His birth don’t yet fully
know just who it is who was born in that stable. They don’t completely
comprehend who is lying in that manger. It’s as if the universe is slowly
realizing … this is the Son of God in our midst! This little one is the King
of Kings! No wonder we neglect to fill our own homes with blue – it’s hard
for us, even 2000 years later, to fully comprehend that the Prince of Peace
has come to us! So bring out that Christmas blue and celebrate the royalty in
our midst. Hallelujah!
Isaiah
9:6 (NIV)
For to us a child
is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
