How Are the Mighty Fallen
These words are from David as he lamented over the death of Saul and his son,
Jonathan. David and Jonathan were such good friends that the Bible tells us
that their souls were knit together (1 Samuel 18:1). This is true
friendship, not unlike some of the true friends that each of us may have
But now David’s friend, Jonathan, is dead. He and his father, the king of
Israel before David, have died in battle. The lament is in 2 Samuel 1:17-27
and three times David ask this question: “How are the mighty fallen?” Yet
the second time he adds to it, turning the question into a statement: “How
are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle!” And David says I am
distressed for thee, my brother.
With the recent death of Scott Kalitta there has been much misinformation and
speculation about what actually happened. This is especially true of those
who were there and saw the whole thing (of course they were half a mile away
in the stands but they can describe everything in great detail, mostly to
make themselves sound more important.)
The true story will come after those who NHRA has reviewing the tapes,
examining the car, and reassembling it to get the complete picture make their
reports. So the question is still the same as four thousand years ago: “How
are the mighty fallen?”
As the cause of the accident that took Scott’s life comes to light, changes
can be made so hopefully no one else will have the same fate. We may never
get the full story, but at least Scott’s death will not be in
vain.
And just a side note to those who try to make themselves seem important…the
man who brought the news of Saul’s death to David tried to make himself seem
important by adding to the story and truth. Check the last chapter of 1
Samuel for the real story! But David took his word that he had done what he
said and had him killed. I sure that was not the reward that he was looking
for, so watch what you say. And let’s keep the entire Kalitta family in
prayer as they go through this time of sorrow and grief.
Looking forward to seeing you at the races.
