The Magnetism of God’s Love
A few years ago I attended a
men’s retreat and one of the fellow attendees took a few minutes to
personally share his story with me. He confided that early in life he had
gone far away from God and down a road of sin. He shared that when he
finally came to his senses and decided to turn back, he found that God was
not far away at all but was there, close by, waiting patiently for him to
turn back.
His story reminded me that,
when I was a youth, I was always interested in science and loved playing with
magnets. When the poles were aligned correctly and you moved one magnet
closer to another, it would suddenly be pulled across the gap and become
stuck to the other. As a kid, I never grew tired of watching that magnet
jump across the gap. The magic of that invisible force of magnetic
attraction was so fascinating.
I guess this magnetic
attraction reminded me of our relationship with our Heavenly Father.
Sometimes we may feel far away, but like the magnet, if we will just take a
tiny step towards Him, we will suddenly find He is there and has drawn close
to us in an instant. The invisible force of attraction, His love, is always
there, waiting.
No matter how far we might
feel we are from God, it is not as far as it looks or seems because he will
draw near to us if we draw near to him. He has pursued us and He waits
patiently for us to take that first step and turn away from our sin and move
towards Him. Oh what a wonderful forgiving Heavenly Father we have.
James 8:8 Come near to
God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify
your hearts, you double-minded.
Proverbs 18:24 A man of
many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer
than a brother.
