True Peace
Another year is coming to a close. Much has
transpired, both good and bad. Like the beginning of a book, 2006 began with
its blank pages bright with promise and potential. There was hope and
anticipation of what was to come. Now, the chapters are nearly completed and
this year is coming to an end. It's time, once again, to review and reflect
upon what has occurred.
In an attempt to process the recent series
of school shootings, I found myself longing for a place of refuge and PEACE!
Is there a safe haven away from the daily frustrations, burdens, worldly
bombardments and escalating catastrophes worldwide and, increasingly, within
our own nation?!
Following the report of the Amish school
girls being killed, I turned to my favorite Bible verses in Psalm 91:1 - 8 (NIV),
for solace. Verses 9 -16 offered additional assurance of God's protection
over us. Even so, my heart was still troubled. I desired to know how to
"dwell in His shelter" and "rest in His shadow".
Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you; my
peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your
hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (John 14:2, NIV).
The footnote for this verse says that the
term "Peace ... my peace" speaks, in effect, of the salvation that Christ's
redemptive work will achieve for his disciples ------ total well-being and
inner rest of spirit, in fellowship with God. All true peace is his
gift, which the repetition emphasizes.
Then it goes on to clarify the next part of
the verse," I do not give ... as the world gives." It says that the world can
only express a longing or wish in its greetings of peace. But Jesus' peace is
real and present.
In summary, John 14:27 (NIV), informs us
that we can experience true peace as a result of the redemption we have
through Christ's gift of salvation.
Jesus further says, in John 16:33 (NIV), " I
have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world
you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
As this year ends, may we encourage and
remind each other to "take heart" so that our hearts won't be troubled. Then,
with the end of time being imminent, let's remember to share the PEACE we
have in Jesus with the lost and hurting people we meet along life's way.
