Plane Faith
Just the other day, Claire and I had the
opportunity to fly once again. As you may know, Claire has a great fear of
flying, while I, on the other hand, only have a dislike for it (especially
the landings.) As we were taking off on the return trip (as the life was
being squeezed out of my hand) I thought of the verse where Jesus was hanging
on the cross and he said, “Father into your hands I commend my spirit,” (Luke
23:46) as I know that there is nothing that I can do to keep an airplane
flying.
All of this made me think about faith. I try
to explain to people about it and what it means to trust the Lord. We are
told in Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the
evidence of things not seen.” Faith is what we express then we get into a
plane…that we believe it will hold us safe and that we can fly while we are
in it, because of confidence in how it was put together and the laws of
aerodynamics. We trust the workmanship and that the people who put it
together knew what they were doing.
The funny thing was, while in the airports
with all the thousands of people waiting to get on planes, I didn’t see one
person ask to see any plane do belly rolls or dives before they would board
it. And yet, when I ask people to trust in the Lord, they will often want to
see a miracle. Even in the Bible, when Jesus was talking to people, they
would ask for a miracle to believe in Him. Yet he never told a lie; even his
enemies had to make up lies to kill him because he had done no wrong.
Why is it so hard to accept what Jesus said
about himself? Is it the fact that we would rather trust something that we
have done, with all the mistakes we have made in life and judgment, than to
trust God? I, for one, would rather trust God rather than myself. And that
trust includes getting on an airplane.
So the next time you get on an airplane, or
make a run on the track, or do anything that you have to put your trust in a
manmade thing, think about your trust in God and what He has done for you.
Have you accepted and trusted Him with your life and eternity? It’s never
too late to do so. You can do so right now by calling 1-888-NeedHim;
someone is always there to talk with you about faith.
