I gotta admit, this is pretty boring; I secretly suspect oil downs are a trick by the track vendors to sell more food. We are sitting here in the bleachers patiently awaiting the clean up…another oil down. (See honey I told you this was going to be great.) I am looking at the 1/8 mile marker and the little reflector that is on the foam box. The sun is just at the right angle and it is reflecting the light source.
"That's us," I said. "What's us?" Grace Lee asks. "The reflector ... that's us"
"Mike, you've had too much sun. Let's go under the bleachers for a while" (last time we tried that, some guy poured out his remaining soda on me ... it was really a "Kodak moment")
"No, really ... don't you see? We do not have the source light in us. God is the source of the light. We are the reflection of Him. Just like the beautiful Shenandoah Valley moon we saw the other night. As pretty as it was, it only is a reflection of the source of the light, the Sun. We are a reflection of God's light. He is the source of all truth, the source of all wisdom, the source of all kindness and love. If there is some area in our lives that we are trying to hide or shade from God, as we run (as Noah did to Tarsus) from God, we are running from the source of all wisdom, truth and love. (C'mon Grace, go with me on this one.)
As long as we stay in the light of God, others see the reflection that otherwise would continue into the darkness looking for some other person to be a reflector. The Moon does not really have a beauty of its own. It's just a cold pile of rocks and dust. The moon only becomes beautiful as it becomes a reflector in the otherwise darkness of the night. Just like us."
When we follow the leadings of the Holy Spirit rather than our worldly temptations, then that is a reflection of the difference He makes in our lives. You bear witness or are a reflection of the true light. "And he was not the light, but was sent to bear witness of that light." (John 1:8) "But he who does the truth...comes to the light that he may be clearly be seen, that they have been done in God." (John 3:21)
Well, they just fired up the next fueler, but maybe next time you are at the races and there is an oildown, you can explain about the light, the reflector and the truth of God to the person next to you. Tell them about the last RFC service you attended, how refreshing it was. As you do you become like that 1/8 mile marker...a reflection of Him, at the halfway mark of your journey to Heaven.
