 Tools For Listening

“Ask, and it shall be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and
the door will be opened for you.” Matthew 7:7

Listening for God to speak to us does not come easily. It requires practice and
skill. However, if we are equipped with the right tools, we can train ourselves to
hear God’s voice. No, you don’t need a wrench, a screwdriver, or hammer. But
try these tools for sharpening your listening skills.

A quite place and time. Stake out a time in your day for God. Some like the early
morning, before the mind becomes cluttered. For those of you who aren’t “morning”
people, maybe the evening is more suitable. That may be your time of settling down
and relaxing. The important thing is for you to ask God to show you what part of your
day is a good time to spend with Him. Once you decide on the time, then find a quiet
place where you can control interruptions. Turn off the phone, the TV, the computer,
hide the newspaper and isolate yourself.

Another tool you will need is your Bible. God speaks to us through His Word. Before
you open your Bible, ask God to help you understand His scripture. Search for God’s
personal instructions to you as you meditate on His words.

Another tool we need is a listening heart. We develop a listening heart by finding a
quiet place and time and by searching God’s word, the Bible, for His truths. When we
become serious about this, we are letting God have our heart, mind and soul and that
grows within us the ability to have a listening heart.

At first, using these tools may be awkward. But, just as with any tool, the more you
use them the more skilled you become. If you want to be like Jesus, be consistent in
picking up these tools and using them daily. Spend time listening to God, He will not
disappoint you. He will be there to give you instructions for your daily walk with Him.
