Conventional theory prescribes a dual plane intake manifold for street use because it offers better low end torque and drivability. For the track, however, a single plane intake manifold will give high revving maximum power. Of course, the engine builder could also choose a tunnel ram, cross ram, tuned port, or individual runner style manifold. Whatever the choice, the intake manufacturer assures maximum performance with the use of his product.

Choosing an exhaust manifold can be just as tricky. Everyone agrees that the factory ‘log type’ manifold must be replaced. Whether the new addition has equal length primaries, X or H crossovers, a tri-Y design and/or anti-reversion tubes is up to the tuner. Once again, performance marketing departments will work overtime to convince the enthusiast of the superiority of its company’s product.

A manifold collects different, individual paths and reduces them into one – like an exhaust manifold. It also distributes something to many different points from a central point – like an intake manifold. The Bible uses the word manifold in conjunction with the wisdom, mercy, grace and works of God. God’s characteristics are manifold. This is part of what makes Him God.

Some people worship creations of their minds and hands. These ‘gods’ are of the same dimension as the humans who created them. When a point is viewed in two dimensions, it is a point. The same is true for a line, a square or any other shape. In the same way, the ‘gods of men’ are consistent with human references.

The God of the Bible, however, is the Creator, not the created. He has no beginning and no end. He is of a different dimension. A two dimensional point becomes a line when viewed in three dimensions. A two dimensional line becomes a square when viewed in three dimensions. A two dimensional square or triangle becomes a pyramid when viewed in three dimensions. His infinite reality is more than we can understand in our limited reality. His characteristics are equally infinite.

This is the meaning of the manifold characteristics of God. This infinite God has chosen to have a relationship with His finite creation. In this relationship He collects and reduces His infinite characteristics down into that which can be understood and applied in our ‘dimension.’ In the same manner, He is able to personally relate to each of us individually, ‘distributing’ to us His characteristics (love, grace, etc.) as needed at that moment.

Let us rejoice in the eternal, infinite God Who desires a relationship with His creation. Thanks be to God Who has done everything to effect this relationship in His Son, Jesus Christ.
