The other night I was watching TV and saw a story on illegal street racing. The first thought that came to my mind was, “They should all be locked up!” And not just the ones who are doing the racing, but the ones who are glorifying it through computer games and movies. Then, I remember in the Word of God where it says, "and such were some of you" (I Corinthians 6:11).
With this in mind I thought about my own racing on the streets some forty years ago. Although it was not the same then as it is today, it was still against the law. One good thing did come from it though—how I met my wife. As I was passing her brother at over 120 M.P.H., I looked into his car and saw this girl I just had to meet!
But my last street race was just me and a friend, late at night, on a road going past a large quarry. We stopped on a straight stretch of a two lane back road and looked ahead to be sure that there were no lights coming at us. When he said go we took off.
Only we didn't know that there were many small stones all over the road near the finish line. We each had wild, out of control rides with much sliding all over the place. To make matters worse, the night sky lit up with red flashing lights. A cop was watching us the entire time!
We both stopped. We didn't get tickets—only a long talking to. But the worst of all was when he said he would talk to our parents. I would have preferred going to jail. From that time on, I only would race at a drag strip.
You may have a similar story. After all, racing on the streets is where our sport came from. That doesn’t make it right to do. It's still dangerous in cars that are not prepared with the safety features that we enjoy at the drag strip.
Yet we need to reach out to these people and help them to see that there is a better way. Just as when we see one who is bound in sin and share with them the way to God through His Son in Love, (John 3:16) we can share all good things. Yes, even our racing.
