Who do you say He is?
“I am the LORD; there is no
other God. I have prepared you, even though you do not know me, so all the
world from east to west will know there is no other God. I am the LORD, and
there is no other.” Isaiah 45:5-6
A friend recently took
me to a contemporary Christian music concert. Although He was not on the
printed schedule, God showed up. I don’t know how many people were at the
outdoor theater – maybe between 700-1000 – but at the end of the concert, the
lead singer in the last band was singing a cappella – popular worship songs
that everyone would know – it was getting dark but you could see in the
lighting that everyone was standing with their hands raised, worshipping the
One True and Only Living God. Mmmmm. It gives me chills. All of us – there
for one purpose – the Body of Christ, unified in Spirit, in Faith, in
Worship.
It was a different experience than when ‘at church’ where there are
nonbelievers – believers are worshipping through the music and others are
merely singing. This was an experience with the body of Christ – unified in
worship. This made me think, "Who is the body of Christ?"
In the Book of Matthew, we read where Jesus is walking with His disciples,
and He turns to them and asks, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” And
they answer Him with what they have heard – then He asks them, “But what
about you? Who do you (plural so as to include them all) say I am?” And
Simon Peter, bless his heart, jumps in and says, “You are the Christ, the Son
of the Living God.” Jesus replies, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for
this was revealed to you not by men, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell
you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the
gates of Hades will not overcome it.” Matthew 16:15.
God revealed to Peter that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the Living God!
And on that rock Jesus builds his church – those of us who know that Jesus is
the Christ, the Son of the Living God – we who have experienced His
forgiveness are the body of Christ – His Church. The Body of Christ is
unified – one faith, one baptism, one Spirit, one Lord – there is but one God
and there is no other.
