Thermometer or Thermostat?
I’m sure you have heard it said that March either
comes in like a lion and out like a lamb or the other way around. This is the
month of changes – especially on the weather front. Spring is trying to
emerge but old man winter isn’t ready to surrender just yet, so it becomes a
battleground between two seasons, often resulting in some violent displays
across our Midwest landscape. But through it all, I look forward to the
beautiful sunshine and a rising thermometer.
We have no choice but to adjust our wardrobe
according to the temperatures where we live. But our attitude in life is much
different. Have you ever noticed how some people are much like a thermometer;
they simply adjust to the mood of their surroundings, while others are
more like thermostats; they tend to set the mood or attitude? Those
that tend to bring us down to their level can be a great discouragement, yet
those that pick us up are a great asset! I hope we can all strive to lift up
everyone around us!
Have you ever heard of Joni Eareckson Tada? She is
a writer, speaker and artist along with many other accomplishments. She’s
also a bubbly, enthusiastic person. You may wonder what is so special about
that. Well, she has been in a wheelchair since her teens, a quadriplegic from
injuries received in a diving accident. Now if she can be upbeat, what is our
excuse for being negative? We never know how many opportunities we may have
to be an encouragement to those around us. Let’s all work together to lift
the mood where ever we are. Make the most of every good day and the best of
every bad one.
Just look around at how blessed we all are. I
seriously doubt that anyone reading this news letter is not in the top 8%
income bracket world-wide. I know the feeling of often lacking the income to
cover what seems necessary. But I have missed few meals or lacked a
comfortable place to sleep and you can probably say the same. How much better
our attitude would be if we accentuated the positive! I have had to adjust my
attitude to not allow some recent challenges in life to keep me down. After
each storm the sun will again shine bright.
So join me in thanking and praising almighty God for
how blessed we are here in this great land. I also thank Him for His
willingness to forgive when we fail, and walk with us when we come to a
valley in our trek through this old world. May we follow Jesus’ example and
reach out and take the hand of someone who is struggling more than we are.
Helping others is the best medicine for being down!
