Cancelled Debt
I’m sure we all know
someone who lives a crazy lifestyle. You might also know someone who
used to have a reckless way of life, but who one day “found Jesus” and
is now a devout Christian. You might wonder to yourself how someone
who was so wild can now be so dedicated to God. Perhaps Luke, 7:41-43
can help explain. It says,
"Two
men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred
denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him
back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him
more?" Simon replied, "I suppose the one who had the bigger debt
canceled." "You have judged correctly," Jesus said.”
What this means for us
is that since we cannot repay the Lord for our sins, we are like one of
the men in the verse and the Lord is the moneylender. So the more we
are in debt to the Lord the more we should love Him for canceling
(forgiving) our sin. He doesn’t do this automatically though, but all
we have to do is ask for it and truly repent.
For those who have “found Jesus” and dramatically
turned their lives around, I suspect they truly realize and appreciate
how much of their debt has been canceled, and that they are now
forgiven and want to share the Good News with everyone.
