The Bible is so full of practical advice. Although sometimes incredibly profound, much of the advice is simple, just common sense. Yet for some reason, we human beings need to “re-learn” (maybe I should just say be reminded) some of the most simple things.
In the New Testament book of James, we read, “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in humility that comes from wisdom.” Well that makes sense. If we have “good wisdom” there should be evidence of it…in our lives, by our deeds, and our humility.
“But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such ‘wisdom’ does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil.” Hmm, so what it is saying is that there is evidence of “bad wisdom” as well: bitter envy and selfish ambition.
I know that if I went into a court of law, that both a prosecutor and a defense lawyer could present evidence of both kinds. Yet my desire, with Jesus’ help, is to live life so that the preponderance of evidence would come down on the side of “good wisdom.” To that I would willingly plead, “Guilty!”
