“Who’s Running This Show Anyway?”

The Bible gives clear evidence of God’s sovereignty. “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!” (Romans 11:33) Who can really explain creation, grace, mercy, justice, unconditional love, redemption, Jesus, the Bible, or even heaven?

God reigns in realms beyond our comprehension, and His plans are beyond our ability to alter, hinder, or stop. God’s sovereignty does not release us from responsibility, which includes the responsibility for choosing our eternal destinies. Within the scope of God’s reign, we have the freedom to say yes or no to Christ, but not the ability to change destinations once we die.

Romans 11:36 states “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.” From him, presenting God as the Proprietor … He has the legal right or exclusive title to everything—the universe, including us too. Through him, describing God as the Producer … He turns crude materials into articles of use—heavens declare His glory, spiritual rebirth prepares people for ministry. To him, showing Him as the Provider … supplying what is needed for universal sustenance—giving everything needed to support life.

His sovereignty does not mean for people to become passive and irresponsible. Complacency has no place in the believer’s life. He wants us to be smart, and live smart, no matter what happens. God’s sovereignty relieves us from anxiety—it doesn’t take away our questions, but when we release our future into His hands, we can release our worry as well.

God’s sovereignty frees us from needing an explanation—we don’t have to know why people suffer or why things happen, it is enough to know the One who knows the reasons.

God’s sovereignty frees us from pride—when the curtain falls and the drama of humankind is over, we may take some satisfaction in knowing that we performed our best, but the ultimate praise goes to the God who wrote and directed the play. Will you depend on God for every area of your life? Will you trust His hand in the most difficult circumstances? Will you reject His ways, or will you sing His praise? God offers hope not despair; confidence not fear; peace not worry; joy not sadness.

God governs the universe and our lives in perfect wisdom, perfect justice, and from beginning to end, with unconditional love. God’s will: nothing more; nothing less; nothing else. Chuck Swindoll said, “The amazing thing is that even in the midst of disappointment, surprise, and mystery, you will discover how very reliable and trustworthy God is, and how secure you are in His hands.” In the final analysis … all of us are dependent on God.
