Many people ask, “Why do you do what you do”?

Did you ever have one of those weeks?  Well, we sure did recently.  It started simply enough with work: getting ready for an indoor car show and making plans to pick up a motorhome. Then the weatherman gave us a small hurdle to overcome…a snowstorm.

Did that stop us?  No way.  Claire was able to get us a snow blower while she was at work on Friday.   So that was step one.  We needed to pick it up, then get a quick course on how to use it, and finally head off to the show.  (Oh yes, we took it with us in the back of the van.)  Then there was the set up and visiting with the vendors, telling them about the Sunday Morning service, and checking on how things had been since we last saw them.

Next came visiting with friends in the racing community, catching up on prayer requests, and taking new ones.  Around 10 PM we were off to home to unload the snow blower and to prepare for day two.

Up at 5 AM and off to New Jersey (I had Dale drive so that I could drive the motorhome back.)  Claire stayed to go to the show.  I was going to join her when I returned.  She is a worrier, which means we needed to pack an overnight bag with extra snacks, etc., just in case we got stuck at the show.  It started snowing around 9 AM and continued all day long.

Claire is an old country girl at heart and every time she hears of a big storm, she fills the bathtub with water in case there is no electricity.  This time was no different.  She turned the water on, went outside to pack the van, and drove off.  Yes, you guessed it. She did not go back and turn the water off.  Some two hours later she remembered.  She called our neighbor to ask him to run over and take care of this little matter for her.

When I got home we had about five inches of snow on the ground and it was still coming down.  I had already been warned of the mess I would find.  What could I do but get the shop vac and start the clean up?  (It took a couple of days to dry out the house and to put things back in order).

Claire is at the show and makes it home after the plows come out.  A night of rest and we are up and back to the show once again.  We are the first ones there and on the radio we hear that over 95% of the area churches have cancelled their services. The show ends at 4 PM.  You asked why have I told you all of this?  Because yes, there are trying times, but the blessings outweigh them.

Throughout the weekend, many people came to us and said thank you for being there… especially, thank you for doing invocations at the races.  There were those two little boys who came up to us and wrapped their arms around my legs and said they sure have missed seeing us.   Then, someone comes and asks you to go and comfort a woman whose husband was killed while racing last year.  You are asked to remember a grandmother who has fallen and now is in a nursing home.  Your chapel service may be small, but then someone says they will sing for you.

We read in Luke 14:23a, And the Lord said unto the servant, “Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in.”  This is the reason that we “do what we were called to do.”   We are able to do this because of your prayers and continuous support.

Thank you!
