A
Fresh Start
We seem to find comfort
in being able to turn the calendar to January every New Year. Each New Year
brings a fresh beginning and an opportunity to put the past behind and begin
looking forward to a new season.
Due to my background as a
minister, my mind remembers a little portion of scripture located in 2
Corinthians 5:14-17, in which this statement is made: “old things are
passed away, and all things have become new.”
The past is gone;
perished forever. 2005 has become merely another memory for the historians to
ponder. For many of you, that may be just fine. Perhaps last year doesn’t
rank high on your list of memorable ones. Perhaps you would much rather think
about 2006, looking forward with hope to the new opportunities and exciting
challenges of the future.
Studies of this scripture
indicate that in some ways this change or new beginning is a progressive
transformation, not necessarily immediate in nature. One Bible translation
says it this way: “all things are becoming new.” The key to
this thought is that there is a definite point of new beginning, from which
springs a progressive development. Oftentimes it is better to not think about
what you are, but to focus on what you are becoming.
As you approach this New
Year, remember that the process of “becoming” takes time. Remember as well
that personal maturity takes time. But maturity and growth will not happen
automatically. They must be thoughtfully planned and carefully considered.
Let me encourage you in
the hectic happenings of your life as you prepare your goals for the New Year
to not forget yourself. In other words, don’t forget to include a few
personal goals as well. And don’t forget to consider the spiritual side of
your life. After all, without personal growth and maturity, anything you do
in life will become empty and unfulfilling. Don’t neglect yourself in 2006.
You’re worth the investment of time and concern.
Think about what you want
to become in the future. Then think about the process of time and the pathway
of choices that will help you reach that goal. Now imagine what could happen
in your life if you were to dedicate totally the commitment and energy
necessary to attain the personal growth and maturity you seek. Not only is
this reality within your grasp, but it is truly an awesome concept to
consider.
